The Delta X5 31-260X Drum Sander is a sander with a 1-1/2 hp Induction Motor with a 6-groove belt and an 18-inch drum for “heavy duty” material removal. The 31-260X is able to produce intricate finishing details with amazing precision. Capable of 2,210 or 3,300 surface feet per minute with both 5-80 or 4-120 grit sanding wraps included, the 31-260X Drum Sander’s front mounted motor control and thickness gauges (along with its larger hand wheel) have been redesigned to accomodate less downtime during use and should make for much easier adjustments.
With an enclosed cabinet base, the 31-260X dampens vibrations and offers smoother sanding as well as protection for the motor from residue, fine dust, and impact – it also boasts user installed storage and shelving space for additional sand wraps. The outboard shaft, designed to accomodate accessory pneumatic drums for contoured sanding, pairs with the 31-260X’s rigid C-framed head for excellent parallelism and stabilty. It comes with a 4-inch seal locking dust collection port for safe removal of harmful materials and can easily be integrated with the entire line of Delta dust collection units for optimum filtration and a healthy working environment. It’s paddle type on/off switch makes for an operator friendly experience and provides added safety.
Of seven customer reviews on Amazon, one five-star reviewer said:
“This is a nice sander for the home workshop but if you are into more serious sanding you might want something more powerful. I find that I have to make many small incremental passes to get the job done even with coarse sand paper.”
The reviewer went on to say that the hardness of the wood plays a role in operation and that the finer grits tend to burn the wood and seem to get worn too quickly.
Another reviewer (4 stars) said:
“This is a fine example of a low cost tool that produces professional results even for the novice user.”
Though this user also reported trouble with the sander, citing that there are no external infeed or outfeed supports and that the sander required adjusting after each pass of wood through the sander.
Recent reviews cite that the manual’s build instructions have you put the machine together incorrectly and that some common sense adjustments make the sander run smoothly, but the original two hour setup time turned into four hours in total after adjustments were made. After these adjustments, however, the reviewer stood by his review (5 stars) and claimed that once he got more use out of the machine, the more he felt that it was perfect for the price.
Two reviewers made serious complaints about snipe at the beginnings and ends of pieces, and burn marks.
